RACISM AS A RESOURCE: HOW TO AGREE TO BE OFFENDED™
Hosted by Kyra D Gaunt, 2009 Ted Fellow and Associate Professor at Baruch College-CUNY
11:00 AM - 12:15 PM

"Race may be a “pigment” of our imagination, but when faced with
conversations of race, we often get stuck. We avoid and separate.
Learn how to transform your view of race throught the freedom to be
offended and stay in the conversation. Youʼll revisit how you first learned
about race, weʼll share those experiences, and see how to turn racism into a resource, into a tool for a new kind of leadership."

My TED Fellows Wish
By 2019, all people are ready, willing and able to embraace and be empowered by ANY communication, eye to eye with the remarkable onesness of humanity, and prejudice, bigotry and discrimination will be a superstition of the past like the earth being flat.  To this end I offer workshops to executives, lawyers, educators, college/universities and school leaders so they can spread the FREEDOM to be offended and stay connected for a future that works for all.

Ways of Seeing: Instructions for Getting Lost
Hosted by Liz Danzico, Chair, MFA Interaction Design, School of Visual Arts
1:15 PM - 2:30 PM

At a time where boundaries are blurred and things unfamiliar, we’re grappling our way through media unfamiliar and unchartered. We’re lost. Feelings of fear, isolation, and even panic set in as we grapple with strategies for making our way out of out situations. Yet what is often overlooked is the simple value of being out of one’s element. With being lost comes increased awareness, heightened perspective, and the potential for experience. John Dewey described this as "having an experience," writers describe it as "being objective," and designers describe it as "getting perspective."

This workshop teaches intentional strategies for gaining perspective—the same strategies one might use when you get lost—giving you insight and critical perspective. Take that perspective back to your work so you can achieve a fresh and close way of viewing the world.

Bio
Liz is chair and co-founder of the new MFA in Interaction Design Program, starting in Fall 2009 at the School of Visual Arts. She’s an independent consultant in New York and is sometimes found teaming up with Happy Cog Studios, on the editorial board for Rosenfeld Media, and the advisory board for Design Ignites Change.

Liz's intention has always been not to have a plan (a plan itself), leaving open each day for possibilities to emerge. While she's organized information for sites across a variety of industries, including retail, publishing, media and entertainment, nonprofit, and financial services. In the past, she's directed experience strategy for AIGA. Before that, she directed the information architecture teams at Barnes & Noble.com and Razorfish New York. She’s been editor-in-chief for Boxes and Arrows, the editor-in-chief for A Brief Message, and has served as a board member for AIGA/NY, and as an advisory board member of the Information Architecture Institute.

Before SVA, Liz taught design at the New School University, the Fashion Institute of Technology, and guest lectured at universities from Columbia to Carnegie Mellon.
